Haskayne school of business - university of calgary

Located in the City of Calgary, the University of Calgary is one of the cream of the crop institutions in Canada. In an almost 40 years of establishment, it has been successful in developing different knowledge and abilities fundamental in order to enhance the professional and personal lives of its students, and have molded around 100,000 graduates. The land area of the campus is 213 hectares and is composed of 17 faculties, over 30 research institutes and centers, and a total of 53 departments. The teaching faculty has about 1,917 full time employees.


The university is considered as the fourth biggest employer of the city of Calgary with about 2500 full time labor force employed. There are over 28,000 students enrolled in the university in undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. This student population includes about 900 international students from about 87 countries around the world. The university is a part of the 17 Networks of Centres of Excellence which is a nationwide approach to study and development intended to develop the economy of Canada as well as enhance the standard of life for Canadians.


Situated in the University of Calgary, the Haskayne School of Business offers an education that lasts for a life time and builds a strong foundation of a successful profession. The school develops not only the skills on analysis and technical development but as well as the strong foundation of efficient, practical and technical skills. Doing such will enable students to understand interdependence which will also enable them to know how to be an effective leader.


The MBA Program of Haskayne trains students to develop their ability to make decisions as well as to act on it. The Haskayne MBA has 10 cores, 2 integrative and 8 electives. The elecetives can be taken in other business schools provided that it is approved by the MBA office. The MBA Programs offers a day time full time, evening time part time, thesis based, and combined degrees. The students under the day time full time MBA Program can finish their schooling for a total of two years. Students can also choose a specialization in their first year or they can opt to select a combined degree with another faculty. For the evening time part time, it can be finished in a span of 3 years.


This allows students to still work while studying since the class schedule for this program are every Tuesdays and Thursdays and starts at 6 pm and ends at 10 pm. Some weekend classes are also scheduled. The thesis based MBA program is open to exceptional students that are inclined with research. For the combined degree, the Haskayne MBA Program ties up with the University of Calgary’s faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Social Work.

American film schools

American film schools have a rich history dating back to the 1970s, when there was little chance to get film education. The only option to gain knowledge was to go to Hollywood at a young age and work along with people in the industry. By the 1970s, many major universities began to offer classes in film technology. Over the years, many film schools have opened with numerous educational programs that provide actual industry experience along with education.


American film schools are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). The schools are commonly departments of universities, divisions of colleges or separate schools. There are some privately owned film schools as well that are not connected to American universities. Most of the schools provide undergraduate and graduate degree programs and some have graduate programs only. Various techniques involved in movie making, including film production, film theory and screen writing are taught. Hands-on practical knowledge and intern programs are included as part of studies.


Some schools are considered top in the nation. New York Film Academy, Los Angeles Film School, USA Film School, San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking, and FSU Film School are among them. These schools are located in prime areas of cities including New York and Los Angeles, and provide better education and have good infrastructure. But studying in these schools is quite expensive.


Founded in 1929, The University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television is the oldest film school in the nation. Some other good schools are the American Film Institute (AFI), California Institute of the Arts, Columbia University School of the Arts, The North Carolina School of the Arts, and the schools at New York University (NYU), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and University of Texas at Austin.

Why does the tool bit break easily in micro milling

Micro milling is one of the three common micro cutting techniques used in micro machining.


In micro milling, the tool bit with diameter as small as 0.1mm is held in a high speed spindle rotating at 20,000 to 150,000 rpm, and used to mill steel, brass and aluminum with depth of cut at about 30 microns and feed rates of 120mm/m to 240mm/m to provide surface quality finishes as good as 0.2 microns.


While micro milling has been successfully applied in manufacturing bio-medical components, embossing dies and micro encoders, the breakage of the tool bit has been identified by many users as a teething problem.


Why does the tool bit break so easily in micro milling as compared to conventional milling?


There are 3 main reasons:


Firstly, when metal is removed by machining, there is a substantial increase in the specific energy required as the chip thickness decreases. This means that in the case of micro machining, as the chip gets thinner with smaller depths of cut, the micro tool bit will be subject to greater resistance when compared to conventional machining. It is as if the workpiece material becomes harder during micro machining. This resistance force is strong enough to exceed the bending strength limit of the tool bit even before the tool experiences any significant wear, and leads to the breakage of the tool bit. One way to prevent this is to make the chip thickness smaller than the edge radius of the tool bit.


Secondly, a sharp increase in cutting forces and stress from chip clogging during the micro milling process would cause the tool bit to break. In most micro milling operations using miniature micro tool bit with two cutting edges, each cutting edge removes the chips from the machining area only within half a rotation. However, if chip clogging occurs, the cutting forces and stresses will increase beyond the bending strength limit of the tool bit within a few tool rotations, and the tool bit will break. Some users prefer high speed steel tool bits as these are very much more flexible and tolerate clogging better than carbide tool bits.


Third, the tool bit tends to lose its cutting edge due to built-up edge and cannot machine efficiently. As the workpiece starts to push on the tip of the tool bit, the tool bit will deflect slightly. The increase in tool deflection and the stress generated by the milling with every rotation will eventually cause the breakage of the tool bit. This process is also called extensive stress-related breakage.


In view of the above phenomena occurring in micro milling, most micro milling machines are sold with sensors to measure the forces acting on the tool bit, and advanced CAM software to predict the chip load throughout the micro machining process. In this way, precision manufacturers seeking a niche in micro milling could try to keep their machines running smoothly with minimal machine downtime.
